Tuesday Teacher Spotlight

Name: Sue Morem

Hometown: Born in St. Louis Park, currently live in Plymouth

Classes taught at Heat: Heat A, Heat B

How long have you been teaching? 3 years

Why became a teacher? Originally I took teacher training to gain a deeper understanding of my own yoga practice due to the emotional and physical changes I was experiencing as a result. During the process I had an opportunity to teach and found that I loved connecting with people through yoga so decided to teach and share all I am learning with others!

Favorite pose and why? Tree pose. It’s grounding, calming and meditative; a time to be still, lift my gaze and express gratitude, and it challenges my balance every time!

Favorite tune to hear in class? Om by Soulfood

Motivational tip or favorite quote? There are so many I like. Here are two favorites that summarize my philosophy:

When you don’t get what you want, learn to want what you get.

You’ve only got three choices in life: Give up, give in or give it all you’ve got.

Advice to beginners? Keep showing up! The more you come to class the sooner you will reap the benefits. Yoga can literally transform your life! You will become stronger, calmer and so much more. Don’t worry if the sequence or poses are challenging. One day you will find yourself easing into a pose you used to struggle with. Getting there is the hardest part. You won’t ever regret your decision to come to class; you will always feel better as a result, so just focus on showing up!

Where can we find you when not at Heat? You will find me teaching yoga around the Twin Cities, taking classes, spending time with my husband and the ‘boys’ our dogs, Max and Moe; babysitting my granddaughter Brooke, and working with my favorite nonprofit, Dress for Success Twin Cities. I coordinate and lead programs for women overcoming poverty and a variety of other challenges to help them gain the confidence and skills they need to obtain and retain employment.

Who knew (fun bit of info about you)? I’ve written six books on personal and professional development and wrote a syndicated weekly business advice column that appeared in the StarTribune for over 10 years. You can still find my columns online at careerknowhow.com

What do you emphasize in your class? I like people to understand that yoga is much more than a physical practice; it is a gateway to serenity, acceptance and peace within. My personal mantra and one that I frequently stress in class is to surrender and let go.

 What would you like students to gain from your class?  To understand the poses and their benefits, to gain strength, self acceptance and self love;  to let go of self criticism and judgment and see the beauty and potential in themselves and others.

Tell us about other jobs (other than yoga teacher) that you do or what you did before teaching yoga:

My most important job has been as a mother; I have three incredible daughters. I’ve been an entrepreneur most of my life; my focus over the last 20 plus years has been speaking and writing about career success to help people gain the edge in their life and career.

What have you learned about yourself, on the mat, that is applicable to life off the mat?

I’ve learned to take and make time for ME. Every time I take a yoga class I feel like I had a mini vacation; and I always feel better than before. It’s easy to find reasons not to do yoga, and easy to fill the time it takes to go to a class, but stepping away makes me a better person.

What difference have you noticed in your body or overall health since practicing yoga?

I am much stronger physically and more relaxed, even under stressful situations. I’ve found that inner peace I was seeking, and even when I feel stressed I rebound back much faster!
