Teacher Spotlight Tuesday

Name:   Sam Lickteig

Hometown:  Algona, Iowa

Classes taught at Heat:

All formats at Heat

How long have you been teaching?

I have been teaching yoga for 4 years, but personal training for 10 years

Why became a teacher?

I love to teach!  I wanted to become a positive influence in people’s lives and I felt yoga was such a great experience for me personally so why wouldn’t other people want to know about the yoga lifestyle.

Favorite pose and why?

Pincha Mayurasana (ForeArm Stand).  I think that this pose represents a balance between strength, flexibility, and confidence.  I also love to be inverted throughout my yoga practice

Favorite tune to hear in class?

Anything Pink Floyd

Motivational tip or favorite quote?

“Just breath and stay consistent with all areas of your life”

Advice to beginners?

Relax, let go of expectations of mastering a pose and enjoy your yoga journey

Where can we find you when not at Heat?

The gym working out, at Tavern restaurant eating, or at my house playing with my 2 girls

Who knew (fun bit of info about you)?

I was homecoming king in high school

What do you emphasize in your class? What would you like students to gain from your class?

Knowledge, I want them to learn how their bodies truly function and how that can change their life from day to day.  Becoming aware of who you are can help tell a story on why you feel the way you do.

Tell us about other jobs (other than yoga teacher) that you do or what you did before teaching yoga:

I have been a personal trainer for 10 years, but I also worked with financial brokerage firm for 5 years before we started Heat Yoga

What have you learned about yourself, on the mat, and that is applicable to life off the mat?

Learning patience has been a big challenge on and off of my yoga mat

What difference have you noticed in your body or overall health since practicing yoga?

Since I started practicing yoga I have become more athletic and coordinated for sure.  My physical body has become more lean and strong than ever before, but most importantly it eases my stressful mind.
