Teacher Spotlight - Miriam Reeves

Name: Miriam Reeves

Hometown: I have a hometown in Virginia, Texas, and Minnesota but I spent the most time in Tyler, TX.

Classes taught at Heat: Heat A on Tuesdays at 7:00 & 8:30 pm at Maple Grove 

How long have you been teaching? Just started!

Why became a teacher? I love yoga! It has gotten me through so many tough times. I believe it can help every person by teaching stability, focus, peace and so much more within everyday life. I want to be a part of the change that yoga can make in a person’s life.

Favorite pose and why? My favorite pose is Tree.  This pose makes me feel strong, steady, and graceful.  I love the mind set this pose helps me to get into. I have a tendency to overthink things and in this pose I can calm my mind and simply be on my mat.

Favorite tune to hear in class? Skinny Love- by Bon Iver

Motivational tip or favorite quote? “A toad in a well can only see a part of the sky.”  -A Chinese proverb. Always be open to climbing out of your comfort zone and trying to see as much of what the world has to offer.

Advice to beginners? Bring a friend if you are nervous to start Yoga, it helps! Also, always remember that everyone in class was once a beginner too. No one is born doing yoga.

Where can we find you when not at Heat? Either at home with my husband, Kyle, in Fridley or somewhere in Minneapolis! I love the art district in Minneapolis!

Who knew (fun bit of info about you)? I am the oldest of 6, I have a sister and 4 little brothers; I love Mexican food and grew up in Texas; Most of my family does Irish Step dancing and compete in Ireland every year; I hate peanut butter and jelly; my favorite flowers are tiger lilies; My favorite color is deep red.

What do you emphasize in your class? What would you like students to gain from your class? In my class I like to emphasize the strengthening and neutrality of your spine.  Your back is so important and in our daily lives we consistently are hunching forward.  I had a hyper Kyphotic upper back (overly hunched) before I started to strengthen my back muscles in Yoga.  It changed my entire life.  I hope my students can gain confidence and peace within my class as I did when I started Yoga.

Tell us about other jobs (other than yoga teacher) that you do or what you did before teaching yoga: Before teaching yoga I went to school for Studio Art, mainly ceramic/pottery.  I have worked at daycares, Caribou, as a janitor, and as a packer for a moving company. I love art and have worked hard to be where I am with my Yoga practice which I think is a kind of art in itself.

What have you learned about yourself, on the mat, that is applicable to life off the mat? I learned how to be confident with my body on my mat.  I learned how to control my body- keep it still or push it to its limit. This changed my life off my mat.  Anyone can tell you how much more confident I am in myself, my body, and what I can do than I used to be.

What difference have you noticed in your body or overall health since practicing yoga? I am incredibly healthier than I was before I started practicing yoga! I can now stand up straight; I can move with more ease because of my increasing flexibility; I am stronger in my body, my breath, and my mind. It opened the door to a more healthy way of living in general.  Yoga really helped me to see and become the person I think I am supposed to be.
