Teacher Spotlight - Kristin Cromie

Name: Kristin Cromie, a.k.a. Yoga Spice

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Classes taught at Heat: Broga, Hatha, Prana, Candlelight

How long have you been teaching? 4 years

Why became a teacher? Yoga helped me heal and feel well, and I wanted to make this accessible to everyone.

Favorite pose and why? Sirsasana / King Headstand; this pose reminds me to take a new perspective, with equal parts invigorating and calming.  And it makes me feel badass.

Favorite tune to hear in class? Anything Desert Dwellers

Motivational tip or favorite quote? Yoga is the perfect place to be curious about who you are.

Advice to beginners? Breathe.

Where can we find you when not at Heat? Running, hiking and baking

Who knew (fun bit of info about you)? I have over 40 hours in the tattoo chair

What do you emphasize in your class? What would you like students to gain from your class? Breath is the key that links the mind and body.  Breath brings awareness to your being on and off the mat.

Tell us about other jobs (other than yoga teacher) that you do or what you did before teaching yoga: I worked in corporate America for 15 years for a packaging company.  I’ve also been a hair stylist and pizza delivery gal!

What have you learned about yourself, on the mat, that is applicable to life off the mat? I am enough, every single damn day. 

What difference have you noticed in your body or overall health since practicing yoga? I have brought awareness to all aspects of my health. I lost 100 lbs. with the inclusion of yoga, I am stronger in my arms and core, and more flexible all around.  Most importantly, I now honor where I should not push my body and respect its limits.

Teacher Spotlight - Jessa Brixius

Name: Jessa Brixius

Hometown: Stillwater, Minnesota

Classes taught at Heat: Heat A, B, C, Intermediate, and Yoga Sculpt

How long have you been teaching? I received my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2010 and began teaching yoga immediately after.

Why did you become a teacher? Ever since the age of 16, my belief was, “No pain, no gain.” I was immersed in anything high impact; Cardio Kickboxing, Boot camp, Spinning, etc. I became a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer, teaching anywhere from 12-15 classes a week for nearly 6 years, (back to back Spinning and Cardio Kickboxing classes were ‘the norm’ for me.) My body became overworked, tired, and I was constantly sore. I knew from experience that yoga brought balance and increased flexibility. I was looking for an opportunity to bring that to my clients, as well as myself. I soon learned Yoga is so much more than just the physical asanas.

Favorite pose and why? Matsyasana/Fish pose. I love the chest expansion/heart opener combined with the core strength!

Favorite tune to hear in class? Anything Bon Iver. I smile when anything random gets played by an instructor. One time I took a class and the instructor played N’Sync and Backstreet Boys during our Warrior series. So random and I loved it!

Motivational tip or favorite quote? “The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” –Marcel Proust

Advice to beginners? At the end of the day, yoga is a breathing class! If you can breathe and remain fully aware of your breath for the duration of the class, you’re practicing yoga. The postures are simply there to challenge your breath. That is all.

Where can we find you when not at Heat? Probably at a coffee shop. Coffee addict! (Decaf most days.) I love the relaxed atmosphere of grabbing a cup of Jo and catching up with a friend. I also enjoy going for walks, canoeing/camping, hanging out near a large body of water, baking or cooking new recipes in my kitchen, and cuddling up on the couch with a good read.

Who knew (fun bit of info about you)? I enjoy washing the dishes! I probably use our dishwasher once a month, if that. There is something therapeutic about the running water and cleanliness afterwards. Call me crazy, but it’s true.

What do you emphasize in your class? What would you like students to gain from your class? It’s so important to work with your body and not against your body. Yoga is about the journey, not the destination. Take advantage of the entire process and know that it will change each time you step onto your mat, that is why it is called a “practice.”

Karma Yoga Benefit - "Small Tick, Big Problem" with Sarah Bazakos
Saturday, April 11th 5:15 PM - 6:30 PM
Event hosted by the partnership of Heat Yoga and Power of Two. Join us for a free one-hour group yoga practice (non-heated), all levels welcome. Voluntary donation up to $20 per person; ALL proceeds go to Randi Deal Einzig Fund. Randi has been fighting Lyme Disease for over 13 years. She has seen over 50 doctors, currently takes 50 pills per day along with daily IV treatments, and has accrued $180,000 in medical bills. At one point this former high school and collegiate gymnast spent 3-months in a wheel chair. As a mother of 3 young children and a working Clinical Therapist, Randi struggles daily to manage her pain and exhaustion. She needs our yogi support and energy to continue making progress with her treatment plan. Her goal is to be well enough to dedicate her practice to counseling other Lyme patients. Come help with yoga postures and connect with your yoga community through a random act of kindness. Meditation with Kristin Cromie
Sunday, April 12th 7-8 PM 
While most people agree that meditation is paramount to maintaining a healthy outlook and calm mind, nearly all find reasons to avoid it. Do any of these sound familiar? -My mind wanders -I can’t turn off the chatter -I tend to fall asleep -It’s hard to find the time -My legs/back/hips hurt -I don’t know if I’m doing it correctly Details: Meditation sessions are completely food donation-based. Please feel free to bring a non-perishable item for the local food shelf. The session will include progressive muscle relaxation, a short teacher-lead guided intention, followed by 30 minutes of silent meditation, and a short closing. The entire session will last about 45-50 minutes. The studio will be candle-lit, warm and silent. Students are encouraged to bring seating (mat, pillow, cushion or chair) and wear comfortable clothing. Each 2nd Sunday at 7PM Fee: Food Donation
