How long have you been teaching? Started May 2014
Why became a teacher? I love the physical aspect of yoga and wanted to not only understand more about the poses, but also be able to share my passion with others hoping that they could see similar benefits.
Favorite pose and why? Savasana – allowing myself this time is so important to my day. Without it, I’m frazzled and frantic!
Favorite tune to hear in class? I love music but when I’m doing yoga, I don’t necessarily have a favorite tune.
Motivational tip or favorite quote?
“When disturbed by negative thoughts, opposite (positive) ones should be thought of. This is Pratipaksa bhavana.” Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 2:33
Advice to beginners? Don’t worry about doing the poses well. Just be present and focus on what you’re doing each moment. Improvement and understanding will come with practice and time.
Where can we find you when not at Heat? Driving to my kids various sporting activities or school activities. On most weekends during the summer, I’m up at my parents’ cabin!
Who knew (fun bit of info about you)? I grew up showing Arabian horses.
What do you emphasize in your class? What would you like students to gain from your class? Alignment and safety are very important to me. I hope that students gain a better understanding of being safe in a pose versus pushing too far.
Tell us about other jobs (other than yoga teacher) that you do or what you did before teaching yoga: I have a BS in Chemical Engineering which has led me to be a recruiter in the engineering area. I currently work part time at an engineering firm doing recruiting, marketing, event planning and various other random tasks.
What have you learned about yourself, on the mat, that is applicable to life off the mat? That you have no control over what has already happened, or what will happen. The only thing you can do is stay present and be in the moment.
What difference have you noticed in your body or overall health since practicing yoga? I have gained strength, muscle tone and flexibility. Yoga has done more for my body than any other form of exercise!
